Legacy of Kain: Blood Omen 2 Review

Blood Omen 2 Rating

The Solitary Vampire:

After Kain refused the sacrifice, he witnessed the destruction of the Pillars of Nosgoth. The mighty towers toppled, the stone fell from where they dissipated into the heavens, and landed around their base, as Kain, uninterested, left the clearing, and turned his back on them. From this point Kain went out to begin his crusade of dominating Nosgoth.

The events of Blood Omen 2 happen because of the alterations made by Kain and Raziel in Soul Reaver 2. Just so you dont get confused, Kain made his 5 vampire lieutenants 500 years after the first Legacy of Kain, Blood Omen.

In these events, Vorador survives and is not put under the blade by Mobius Crusade. This also makes sense to why Kain has an army so fast, seeming how in the original events leading up to Soul Reaver, it took Kain 500 years to complete his army and then to begin dominating Nosgoth, etc.

In the wake of the vampires destruction, Vorador created a new race of vampires, to which, Kain used to create his army. After a 200 year period between the closing of the first Blood Omen, Kain stampeded all over Nosgoth, with nothing being able to stop him. (Kain does not yet have the ability to make Vampires himself, only Vorador had the secret, this could be a reason why they had to include Vorador in the story, how else would Kain have an army?) Kain raged down to the sea borders of Nosgoth, finally reaching the walls of Nosgoths lonely capital, Meridian. At the gates of the great city, Kains Vampire Army engaged in battle with the new risen order of humans, being titled with the familiar name, The Sarafan. Led by a mysterious power, identified only as the Sarafan Lord the vampires and the Sarafan engaged each other, for the final climactic battle, deciding on who will rule Nosgoth. As it turns out, the Sarafan Lord and Kain were engaged in solitary battle, and Kain was struck down, losing his prized possession, the Soul Reaver to the Sarafan Lord, and Kain himself was supposedly destroyed.

The Shroud of Time:

Through a mirage of unclear memories and nightmares, Kain awakens. Rising from his slumber he meets with another vampire, called Umah. Umah quickly informs the still arrogant Kain about the going ons around Nosgoth. As it happens, Kain had been in a slumber for 200 years, while the vampires nurtured him back to health, taking care of what little life force Kain had left after being struck down by the Sarafan Lord. Kain now, was their best weapon, a shadow of the past, forgotten in the shrouds of time, and an unknown adversary, thirsty for revenge. Losing practically all his powers and talents, and some memories, Kain sets out on the mission to bring down the new Sarafan Order, which for so long has been ruling over a land Kain knows is his.

A bit confusing? Let me help with the story comparisons, just so you all know what the story for Blood Omen 2 is. Its one flaw in the game to make it so unclear as to what is going on. A brief interlude before the credits role by Kain could say thus:

Because I altered Raziels fate, this happened. Or whatever.

Original Timeline:

End of Blood Omen - 50years after Blood Omen (Around the second time line of Soul Reaver):

Kain destroys the Pillars, by refusing sacrifice, damns Nosgoth, unleashes a multitude of horrors onto the land, aka, demons etc. Kain, being the sole surviving Vampire, goes practically unnoticed, while Mobius Army changes into a party of rag-tag demon hunting knights.

100-500 years after: Everyone is in a rightful state of misery, and move into larger fortified centres of Nosgoth, to hide from all these nasty beasties of the land, while Kain cruises the land finding a way to make himself ruler of Nosgoth.

Kain scours the land for secrets and treasures, discovers the Time Streaming place belonging to Mobius and leaves. Figures out how to create vampires, realizing it will be difficult, and sets out to create five vampire Lieutenants to build an army for him.

Kain searches the land for the perfect, uh, corpses, and stumbles onto the crypt of the ancient Sarafan Warrior Priests, where six of the holiest Knights were laid to rest. (Or at least honoured, there was no grave containing the body of Malek.)

Inside Kain raised the corpses from their graves, his first born being Raziel, then Turell, Dumah, Rahab, Zephon and last, Melchiah.

From there, Kains army was created, he went about, pillaging the land, the humans built feeble resistances, but were crushed, until Kain finally established his Empire, and the seat at the defiled Pillars of Nosgoth.

It is the general consensus that a game concerning Kains roamings and actual rise to power would have been really fun and cool to play, but what we got was this - time for the timeline to go all funny!

Because of the events of Soul Reaver 2, Raziel not being eaten by the Soul Reaver, yet, it would have major repercussions on history. The repercussions havent been clearly explained yet, and wont be until Soul Reaver 3, but these events in Blood Omen 2 are because of the events in Soul Reaver 2.

Altered Timeline:

End of Blood Omen - 50years after Blood Omen (Around the second time line of Soul Reaver):

After the destruction of the Pillars, Vorador sees the damned land, the ravaged race of the vampires, nearly completely exterminated by Mobius himself. There were two surviving vampires, Kain and Vorador. Vorador created a new race of vampires, from which, Kain used as his army, to begin his conquest of Nosgoth.

100-200 years after Blood Omen:

With his army completed, Kain began his crusade, crushing all human resistance, moving throughout the cowering centres of Nosgoth. From nowhere, came a new order of Sarafan, to counter the new vampire infestation, and fought back with such ferocity, the two armies were practically even matched.

200 years after Blood Omen, Kains armies met at the stagnant walls of the water city capitol of Nosgoth, Meridian, where the two forces clashed once and for all. The outcome, of course, saw Kain being defeated and struck down by the Soul Reaver, (his own sword) by the Sarafan Lord. With the army defeated, the vampire ranks dwindled, the vampires fled into the great labyrinth of the mighty city, where they hid, for a further, 200 hundreds.

Kain, had almost been destroyed. Umah, a female vampire, found his broken body, sensing a small spark of life, fled into Meridian, and nurtured it back into health.

400 years after Blood Omen:

Kain arises from his sleep, with lost memories and confusion as to what the hell is going on, and is informed by Umah about the current going ons and so on.

and so, the game begins.

And of course, 500 years after Blood Omen, Kain raises his lieutenants, (could be a clash between Kains vampires and Voradors vampires, because Vorador doesnt really much like Kain at the end of Blood Omen 2) and sets about to conquer Nosgoth.

piece of cake, do we understand the plot yet? I bloody hope so.
