DUNE 2000

This is the versionon the PC mind you. There was a massive up-roar when this game was released in 1998. It left people clinging to their copies of the original incarntaion, while pointing grubby fingers at the remake screaming: "It Sucks!" This is interesting to hear, how most people would dismiss a game based on what others had said. So guess what, ColdBain, the fair voice on the interenet, has gone through this game, to decide whether it is actually a good game.

History:

Way back in 1993, Westwood released the very first stragety game, called: Dune 2 The Battle For Arrakis. It was a groundbraking game, it allowed you to control armies, and attack an enemies base across landscapes of sand. You'd Harvest this mineral called The Spice, and this would act as your money. Back then, no one had ever played a game like this, and in knowing it was based on Frank Herbert's very popular novel series called, Dune, the game was accepted by all type of people around the world. Westwood went on to create other games from there, moving onto a more down to Earth stragety games, like the Command & Conquer series, and Red Alert. But in early 1998, Westwood announced they had put into porduction a remake of Dune 2, which would be called Dune2000. This was a counter attack to Blizzard's franchias, Starcraft, but it failed. Dune2000 failed because every person who played couldn't get over the fact that it was identicle to Dune 2: The Battle For Arrakis. All Westwood did was upgrade the Graphics, made the story a bit more diffinative, and tie in aspects to the game that were from the 1982 movie adaption of Frank Herbert's book. The game flopped teribly.

Good Aspects:

The game is a remake of the original, but it will be you either like it or not. The game is easy to pick up, and it isn't the most exerting game ever, if you can't be bothered doing anything, this game can act as a mere mind melting experiance, you only need to move the mouse and zo out as you command troops everywhere. Another good aspect is you could find this game about anywhere, and you could even pick it up for about $5. Another good thing is that it doesn't take up much space on your computer and it doesn't need a lot of specs to run. The game has execellant in-game music, taking heed from the 1982 Dune movie, where the only good thing about it was the Fremen and the music.

The Bad Aspects:

The game offers nothing new. If you've played Dune 2 or Command and Conquer, then this game will be no suprise. The life span is varied because you may not even want to atempt the other houses, because they are the same, only difference is the beginning video for them. Sometimes the enemy is too hard to over-come and you don't require much stragety to win, only advice you need for the game is: build lots and lots of units and you've one. And the sandworms aren't nearly as much of a danger to you anymore, they come and go, and they don't look that too impressive.

So What's The Verdict?

Graphics: 4/10
The games enviroments do look impressive and well crafted, but, the game is aging, and you are faced with the same landscape, every mission.

Gameplay: 7/10
Doesn't take much to play, it's easy to use, and fun in a sense to control, only problem is it's hard to overcome the enemy sometimes and the harvesters are target to too much harrassment from the enemy

Lifespan: 5/10
The game is quite long actually, but most people would bore from it, the Houses don't provide nearly enough variation and there is no real reward in finsihing the game.

Total: 5/10
The game is fun to play, and one of my favourites, but after re-rating it, it isn't that too impreesive, if you've got a spare $5 though, I recommend it.

The Run Down:

The game itself isn't as bad as people would think. The graphics are old nowadays, but the sand landscapes and the rock is very well crafted, it's the little men on the screen that let things down greatly. The basic jist of the game is that you can be one of three factions, House Harkonnen, House Atreidies, and House Ordos. The only difference between these three houses were, they have different colours, different computer voices, and they each have a different super tank and their barracks don't look the same. It's strange to note that Westwood didn't feel the need to upgrade their game, all they did was change the graphics, so, if you own Dune 2: Battle For Arrakis, you may not appreciate this game as much, but that doesn't mean it's still not fun to play. The video clips before each stage are pretty corny, but some are quite entertaining, but the dispointing thing is the ending video clip for each House, each of which is about 30seconds long. People would have noticed something was amiss with the game, because it's all crammed onto one disc.

On Playstation, Westwood released two versions of Dune2000, one of which, was simply called Dune, this was appaling because of the fact they tried to incorperate 3D visuals, there were no textures to the map, the sand was just one shade of yellow, and the veihicles were massive blocks of green or blue. The loading were so bad that sometimes the PLaystation couldn't even load a map. Later on they released Dune2000, which was just a direct conversion of the PC game, this was a good conversion, except for the loading times were a large down side.

In 2001, Westwood has released a sequel to Dune2000. The events that take place within the game was a stepping stone for Westwood. Westwood developed and created a magnificant sequel, with 3D visuals, gameplay is far superior and the life-span far exceeds Dune2000s. The only thing that remains the same between the houses now is the computer voice, and they all need to use Harvesters. The game is far more interactive and is in the Top-Ten games list of New Zealand and Australia. The game is called: Emperor: Battle For Dune, you can ally with the Sardaukar, Fremen, smaller houses such as Ix and the Tilauxue, and even team up with the Spacing guild, making each time you play this game a different experiance. I recommend this game, but it does come with a heavy price tag of around $90
